Coronary Artery Revascularisation, Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting, Minimally Invasive Aortic Valve Replacement, and Complex Aortovascular Surgery.
Professor Bilal was appointed at the Manchester Royal Infirmary as a Consultant Cardiac and Aortovascular Surgeon in February 2016. At the time, he was one of the youngest appointed consultants in the country.
During his time at Manchester Royal Infirmary, Prof. Bilal has developed complex Aortovasucular Services at Manchester Royal Infirmary. He led the development of Type A Dissection Repair Programme, Aortic Arch, Distal Arch, and Thoracoabdominal Aneurysm Repair (TAA, DATA) surgeries at Manchester Royal Infirmary with excellent results, published nationally and internationally. He also specializes in Aortic Valve Repairs and Valve Preserving Aortic Root Replacement. He performed the first Total Arch Replacement in Manchester with Novel Frozen Elephant Technique (Thoraflex, FET) in 2016. Subsequently, he was credited with the 500th successful implantation of Thoraflex, Frozen Elephant Trunk in the UK in 2018. He performed the first valve preserving aortic root replacement with Total Arch Replacement in Type A Dissection in Manchester. Working in a team of six surgeons he also performed the first Minimally Invasive Total Arch Replacement with Novel Endovascular Stent. Manchester Royal Infirmary. Since its birth in 1830, Manchester Royal Infirmary has led in innovation and research. It opened its doors to complex surgical Descending Thoracic Aorta Replacement (DTA) and Thoracoabdominal Aneurysm Repair (TAA) in 2017. Prof. Bilal performed the first successful DTA and TAA repair since the inception of cardiac services in Manchester. He has led the development of minimally invasive aortic procedures and performs minimally invasive aortic valve replacements, aortic root, and coronary artery bypass grafting.
Professor Bilal is currently involved in multiple research projects and is proudly affiliated with Manchester Metropolitan University as a visiting Professor. in collaboration with the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at MMU, Prof. Bilal is director of MAnchester Aortovascular Institute (MAVI) along with Professor Yvonne Alexander (now Emerita) and Dr. Fiona Wilkinson.
He specializes in performing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting on a beating heart (Off-Pump) without the use of a Heart-Lung Machine. More than 97% of coronary artery bypass grafting procedures are performed with this technique using multiple arterial conduits.
He graduated in 2004 and finished his Foundation Programme Training at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. He completed his surgical training in the North West of England and has worked across many of the region’s leading hospitals, including Manchester Royal Infirmary, Wythenshawe Hospital, Blackpool Victoria Hospital, and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.
He was awarded the National Aortic Fellowship by the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery of Great Britain and Ireland (SCTS) and completed advanced Aortic Surgery training with Prof Aung Oo at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. He was awarded a National Scholarship by Vascutek and completed visiting Fellowships at the Leipzig Heart Centre in Germany, the New York-Presbyterian Hospital, and the Texas Heart Institute.
